Hello folks.

Attached is the notice for this month's presentation. Please note the date is a Thursday this month.

As usual, the venue will be the Marlborough Aero Club – Clubrooms – Aerodrome Road Omaka at 7.00pm. This month please don't arrive at the Clubrooms before 6.35 pm as another group will be using the venue until 6.30 pm.

This month's Speaker is John Bampfylde, Managing Director of Dronemate a Nelson based company that uses Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (aka UAVs or "Drones") for a wide range of commercial tasks.

This technology is "coming to a place near you" very soon if it is not already there so come and listen to John's fascinating presentation.

Oshkosh and US Aviation Sites Tour 2015

Harvey will be well known to you as the Secretary of our local Blenheim RAeS Branch.

His presentation supported by an expansive pictorial record, will cover a seven-week tour of USA aviation sites carried out by Harvey and his son David in 2015.
The self-guided tour culminated in an extended stay at the legendary aviation mecca of Oshkosh.
The presentation will provide an insight into places and aviation heritage that many of us aspire to retrace but most have not been lucky enough to visit. 

As usual, the event will be held at the Marlborough Aero Club Clubrooms, Aerodrome Road Omaka at 7pm.

Members, non-members, interested persons and guests are all welcome. Tea and Coffee will be available. Dress is casual.

As noted in the attached notice, this month the presentation will be preceded at 6.15 pm by the Annual General Meeting of the Blenheim Branch of the RAeS for those members and observers who wish to attend. His presentation will cover his exciting and varied 20-year Royal Navy fighter pilot career – including a healthy mix of carriers, operational flying, instructing, historic flying and international postings and work with the F-35B Joint Strike Fighter and the new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers.

SUBJECT:  The SH2G Super Seasprite in New Zealand Service

This is to confirm my earlier advice that our meeting will take place as above.

Keith is a former Royal Navy and Royal New Zealand Navy Naval helicopter operator whose career has included being CO of Number 6 Squadron (SH2G) and was later the Ministry of Defence project manager for the procurement and introduction to service of the recently purchased SH2G(I) SuperSeasprite helicopters and the Penguin missiles, simulator and other equipment and services that formed part of the package.

Steve Moore's presentation completes the history of the Skyhawk in RNZAF service – following on from John Lanham's presentation to the Branch last year that covered earlier operations.
Steve's experience makes him well qualified to cover his subject. Steve joined the RNZAF as a University Officer Cadet in 1976 graduating from Canterbury University before training as a pilot.

His distinguished career has included:
 

•            Tours as a Skyhawk pilot including as Commanding Officer (CO) of No 2 Squadron and CO of No 75 Squadron, (including establishment of the RNZAF Skyhawk aerobatic display team);

•            Graduating from the Empire Test Pilot School - 1985 and test flying the upgraded A4K Skyhawk;

•            Graduating from the Royal College of Defence Studies UK – 2004;

•            Commander of the NZDF Provincial Reconstruction Team in Afghanistan 2005 – 2006

•            Several senior RNZAF and NZDF command appointments.

Steve retired from the RNZAF as an Air Commodore in 2013 and since then has held the appointment of Deputy Director in the NZ Civil Aviation Authority responsible for General Aviation – a very active and challenging aviation role.

Hello folks. Our 15 November presentation will be given by Brett McKenzie of Marops. Brett is a director of this innovative company and he also continues to fly as a reserve pilot on 5 Squadron RNZAF Orions. (click Newsletter link above).

The largest current project the company is working on is the airborne simulation system for the new Acoustic System being installed on the P3K2 Orion aircraft by Boeing Defence and Space Systems of Huntington Beach, California.

Ken Loving of General Atomics recently provided wide ranging presentations to the NZ RAeS Symposium and to several New Zealand agencies on the many civil and government uses of the company's large sophisticated RPAS (AKA UAVs etc). Ken has kindly consented to Des Ashton providing an abridged version of this presentation to the Blenheim Branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society and other interested people on 18 October. The presentation includes video and other imagery.

Des has experience in aviation, defence and various other sectors and is well connected with companies that supply and operate RPAS and the companies that provide and integrate the technologies that make them ever more capable.

This month's speaker will be the General Manager Regional Maintenance Operations for Air NZ, Adam McMillan. This role includes but is not limited to responsibility for maintenance of the Air NZ Link turbo-prop fleet and similar work for other customers in the region.

Adam will give us a brief overview of his career, talk a bit about his involvement with the Air NZ Gas Turbines business, SAFE Air and Components and then a presentation on Air NZ Regional Maintenance Ltd.

SUBJECT:  The A4K/G Skyhawk in RNZAF Service, pre-KAHU Update, 1970-1990

John Lanham's years in the RNZAF included the decision making of the 1960s on the Canberra B(I)12 replacement, the introduction of the Skyhawk and eventually three flying tours on the aircraft, totalling 1000 Skyhawk hours.
Amongst the highlights for him were numerous deployments including Vanguards to SEA, RIMPAC in Hawaii and Cope Thunder in the Philippines, the celebrated Kin Nan incident, leading the aerobatic team, the acquisition of the RAN Skyhawks and the reforming of No 2 Squadron.

Our July presenter is John Wyllie the inventor of the world's first cellphone to headset interface.
In 1995, frustrated that he could not use his cellphone while flying his helicopter, New Zealand pilot John Wyllie developed a device he called 'Flightcell' - the world's first cellphone to headset interface. John is now the very hands-on CEO of this very successful company based in Nelson – a shining example of an innovative and nimble Kiwi company.

Don spent 18 years in the RNZAF as an Avionics Technician (1984-2001). He "Retired" as a

Flight Sergeant after being made redundant ("DJ2'ed") when Helen Clark's Labour

Government disbanded the RNZAF Air Combat Force in December 2001. He had spent most

of his RNZAF career working on or around the Skyhawks at Ohakea and Nowra, including

postings on Nos 2 and 75 Sqns. 

He is also a member of the US Based Skyhawk Association, a member of the Christchurch

branch of the RAeS and is a Volunteer Guide at the Air Force Museum at Wigram.

Don has a massive collection of Skyhawk photographs some of which he will be sharing with

us in this nostalgic (for some of us) presentation.
