Venue:      Classic Flyers, 9 Jean Batten Drive, Mt Maunganui

Subject:   What's in an Airshow?

An expert panel of some of those directly involved in the planning and execution of the TCAS 2017 - Strikemasters at Sundown airshow will provide a perspective of what they had to do to run an airshow, including:

- Andrew Gormlie - Airshow Director

- Pete Jenkins - Airshow co-ordinator, and

- Des Underwood – Airshow Approvals

- James Pengelly - Senior ATC controller

- Jim Rankin – Display Controller

Light supper to follow – a gold coin donation would be appreciated

Graham Lister was assigned to Operation Overdue as Air NZ Liaison, where his background in air freight and his many industry contacts proved useful. Although Graham didn't get to Antarctica himself, he was awarded the NZ Special Services Medal (Erebus) in 2007 for the part he played in New Zealand.

In compiling his material on Erebus, Graham has formed a view on the facts and the many opinions which were written about the accident. Some of these materials were acquired from the estate of the late Ross MacPherson, the former Editor of 'NZ Wings'. Graham will share his view in his lecture with us which (unlike his previous lecture) will be supported by photographs and graphics.

 (Note NEW Topic)

Date:           Friday 4 March at 5.30pm for 6.00pm start

Venue:
Classic Flyers, 9 Jean Batten Drive, Mt Maunganui

Lecture Topic:      "
 The DC-3 Re-born: Basler BT-67 "

This month's Branch meeting will be chaired by Dr David Lyon, and Des Underwood will deliver the lecture. This change followed advice from Lloyd Klee that he needed to defer his planned lecture until a later date.
Des was recently re-elected as Chair of the Bay of Plenty Branch and his recent work preparing some material for Peter Layne's DC-3 Excursion Flight from Whakatane coincided with his discovery of an excellent book by Bruce McAllister, titled: 'DC-3: A legend in Her Time - 75th Anniversary Photographic Tribute' which sparked his interest in the on-going viability of the aircraft type. After reading the chapter on 'Turboprop DC-3s' and with his own experience of the DC-3 with the RNZAF and later the HS Andover CMk1, Des concluded the re-born DC-3's merited a future lecture topic and set about expanding his research on the topic. This revealed an insight into the new lives of these venerable veterans of the sky following turbine engine conversions and differing levels of upgrade. The lecture will trace the various DC-3 turboprop conversions and focus on the Basler BT-67

Des will support his lecture with slides and two 10min videos which should prove exciting for aviators and enthusiasts alike.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday night.

Lecture:      "GLIDING IN THE BAY"

This lecture will be presented by Adrian Cable who is the President of the Tauranga Gliding Club. After starting his flying career in the RAF in 1978, where learned to fly on Jet Provost Mk5 out of RAF Cranwell, Adrian made his first flight in a glider from Tauranga in 1991. Since then he has become an A Cat Gliding Instructor as well as tow pilot trainer. He has twice served as Club CFI and this is his second term as the Club President.

On the wider front, Adrian has served as the National Operations Officer for Gliding NZ (GNZ), a role with delegated authority from the CAA to control gliding in NZ. Last season he competed in the South Island regional gliding champs, flying the club Duo Discus. Having flown frequently in the South Island, this event was the 50th Anniversary Gliding Contest and he flew as PIC (Pilot in Command) with Mark Tingey (on his first contest in the mountains) and together they won the 20m class.

Adrian will be assisted by David Lyon who is one of the tow-plane pilots who will identify the aircraft types used by the Club and why.

For some of us, the progress of technology and design in gliding has been little more than we see displayed at the odd airshow. For those in the sport, the progress has been significant. For those aviation enthusiasts in Tauranga with ever an ear to sounds in the sky, some may have heard the sound of a small jet attached to a glider.

Please read our October Newsletter for more information about this lecture, and future events..
